Whale Watching Sail
Waikiki Whale Watching on a Luxury Catamaran
Every winter, one of nature’s greatest spectacles unfolds just offshore from Waikiki Beach. Thousands of North Pacific humpback whales migrate from the cold feeding waters of Alaska to the warm, protected seas of Hawaii — and the waters off Oahu are among the best places on Earth to witness it. Our Waikiki whale watching sail puts you right in the middle of the action aboard the Holokai Catamaran, departing directly from the beach with an open bar included. Whale sightings are not guaranteed – but if you don’t spot a whale, we’ll bring you back for a second sail at no extra charge*.
*The sail can only be redeemed for the 3 PM sailing from Dec 1st until March 31st the same whale watching season and must be processed in the office to be officially validated

Why Humpback Whales Come to Hawaii
Humpback whales are one of the ocean’s most awe-inspiring creatures. Adults can reach up to 45 feet in length and weigh as much as 40 tons, yet they’re capable of launching their entire bodies clear out of the water in a full breach – a sight that stops guests mid-sentence every single time.
Each year, humpback whales make one of the longest migrations of any mammal on the planet, traveling up to 3,000 miles from Alaska to Hawaii. They come to these warm, shallow waters for one purpose: to give birth, nurse their calves, and mate. Unlike their feeding grounds in Alaska, Hawaii’s waters offer no food for the whales – they survive entirely on fat reserves built up over the summer. What this means for whale watchers is extraordinary: the whales are relaxed, social, and active near the surface. They’re not feeding or fleeing. They’re here to rest, play, and raise their young.
During whale season off Waikiki, it’s possible to encounter mothers with newborn calves, competitive pods of males competing for a female’s attention, and whales engaged in surface behaviors like breaching, tail slapping, pec slapping, and spy-hopping. These are the moments that make whale watching in Oahu an experience unlike anything else.

Waikiki Whale Watching the Holokai Way
There are plenty of whale watching tours on Oahu. Here’s what makes ours different.
Direct Beach Boarding from Waikiki
Most whale watching tours in Honolulu require guests to take a shuttle to Kewalo Basin Harbor or another departure point miles from Waikiki. With Holokai, you check in steps from your hotel and board our catamaran directly from the beach. No shuttles. No harbor crowds. No bus. It’s the most convenient whale watching experience in Waikiki – and far more memorable than queueing on a commercial pier.
A Luxury Catamaran, Not a Crowded Powerboat
The Holokai is a custom 49-passenger beach catamaran with spacious open seating, a netted splash area, and unobstructed sightlines in every direction. There’s no cramped lower deck, no blocked views. Whether you prefer to sit at the bow, lounge on the nets, or stand at the rail with your camera ready, you’ll have the space to experience every moment fully.
Whale Sighting Guarantee
If you sail with us and don’t spot a humpback whale, come back for a complimentary second sail – valid through the end of that year’s whale watching season (March 31s). Just stop by our office to have it validated.

What You Might See on Your Oahu Whale Watching Tour
Humpback whales are the star of the show, but the waters off Waikiki are teeming with marine life during winter months. On any given sail you may encounter:
Humpback whale behaviors – full breaches (the whale launching completely out of the water), tail slaps, pec fin waves, spy-hops (the whale rising vertically to observe the surface), and the telltale blow of a whale exhaling up to 30 feet in the air.
Mother and calf pairs – some of the most moving wildlife encounters you’ll ever have. Newborn calves stay close to their mothers and are often seen surfacing to breathe in the same rhythm.
Spinner dolphins – Hawaii’s waters are home to pods of spinner dolphins that frequently join boats in the bow wake, leaping and spinning alongside the hull.
Hawaiian green sea turtles – honu are commonly spotted year-round and can be seen surfacing near the catamaran during our sails.
Seabirds and flying fish – the activity of larger marine life often stirs up baitfish, drawing in frigate birds, boobies, and other seabirds that make for spectacular viewing.

The Holokai departs from the beach for all of our sails, so be sure to bring footwear that you can easily slip on and off! The walk down to the beach may take from 5 to 10 minutes, a maximum of 0.3 miles down to the boat.
