What Is Turtle Canyon?
Turtle Canyon is a shallow reef system just offshore from Waikiki on Oahu’s south shore. It serves as Oahu’s most established natural cleaning station – affectionately known by our crew and locals as a “turtle car wash.” Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles (honu) congregate here specifically because schools of local reef fish love to eat the algae right off their shells. The turtles enjoy this spa-like treatment so much that they reliably stay in the area year-round to get pampered!
On any given morning or afternoon, you’re likely to encounter multiple turtles hovering over the reef for their car wash, surfacing for a breath of air, or resting on the sandy bottom. You may also spot octopus (tako), and an abundance of colorful reef fish.
Turtle Canyon is the best snorkeling spot in Honolulu for one simple reason: it’s not a boat trip to a random reef hoping to get lucky. The turtles are reliably here waiting for their car wash, and it all sits just minutes offshore from your hotel.

Why Choose Holokai?
There are several operators offering snorkeling on Oahu, so what makes Holokai different? A lot, actually.
Skip the Harbor – Start from the Beach
Most Oahu snorkel tours depart from Kewalo Basin Harbor, which means a shuttle from Waikiki, a crowded pier check-in, and dock waiting. Holokai is a true beach catamaran. Your check-in is steps from your hotel and you board directly from the sand. It’s one of the most convenient turtle snorkeling experiences in Waikiki.
A Premium Catamaran, Not a Powerboat
The Holokai is a custom-designed, handcrafted 49-passenger beach catamaran with a full 360-degree view from the deck, spacious seating, and a netted splash area where you can hang over the water as we sail. After your snorkel, feel the Hawaiian trade winds and relax on the bow nets with a cold drink as we sail the Waikiki coastline toward Diamond Head.
Expert Marine Life Guides
Our crew knows where the turtles are, how to approach them safely and respectfully, and how to help first-time snorkelers feel confident. We’ll help you identify Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles (Honu), octopus (Tako), and tropical reef fish on your Waikiki snorkeling with turtles experience. Great for kids too – our crew goes out of their way to make younger guests feel safe and amazed.

A: Our check-in is at the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort, 2169 Kālia Rd – sitting in the heart of the Waikiki hotel corridor. Guests staying at Hilton Hawaiian Village, Hale Koa Hotel, Sheraton Waikiki, Royal Hawaiian, Halekulani, Ka La’i Waikiki Beach, and Embassy Suites Waikiki are all within a 5-10 minute walk. If you’re staying further east toward Kapi’olani Park or the Honolulu Zoo end of Waikiki, the walk is closer to 15-20 minutes – still very doable on foot with no car or shuttle needed. The entire length of Waikiki is walkable to our check-in, making Holokai one of the only catamaran snorkel tours in Oahu you can walk to directly from your hotel.
-
A: From check-in at the Outrigger Reef, it’s a 5-10 minute walk (maximum 0.3 miles) down to the beach boarding point. The exact spot shifts slightly depending on the tide – we always choose the safest boarding location for conditions that day. Our crew will guide you the whole way, so there’s no guesswork. Wear footwear you can easily slip on and off, as you’ll be stepping onto the sand to board.
-
A: Yes. Validated parking is available at the Embassy Suites Waikiki Beach Walk, a short walk from check-in. Validation covers up to 4 hours for $15. Street parking in Waikiki is limited, so the Embassy Suites garage is your most reliable option if you’re driving in.

A: Everything you need is included in your ticket: professional-grade fins, dive mask, snorkel, and snorkel vest; a professional snorkel guide who gets in the water with you; reef-safe sunscreen; motion sickness aid; complimentary snacks; and non-alcoholic beverages (water, juice, soda). -
A: Turtle Canyon is Oahu’s most reliable spot for Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle sightings — it’s an active feeding and cleaning ground where honu gather year-round. On the vast majority of tours, guests encounter multiple turtles. That said, these are wild animals in their natural habitat, and sightings can never be 100% guaranteed. What we can guarantee is that our crew knows exactly where to look and will do everything possible to give you the best chance of an incredible encounter.
-
A: Our Turtle Canyon snorkel tour welcomes snorkelers with various experience levels. We provide professional snorkel guides, comprehensive instruction, and all necessary equipment including snorkel vests for added safety and buoyancy. However, guests should be at least okay swimmers, and confident in ocean water as the snorkel site is approximately 30 feet deep. Our crew is experienced in helping first-time snorkelers feel confident and safe in the water. We do not recommend this tour to any first-time swimmers, but first-time snorkelers are more than welcome! Those who lack required swimming abilities as assessed by the captain & crew may be asked to stay on the boat for the duration of the snorkeling section.
-
A: The total trip is 2.5 hours. That breaks down to approximately 1 hour 15 minutes of snorkeling at Turtle Canyon and 1 hour 15 minutes of sailing – including the sail out, time on the nets, and the scenic return along the Waikiki coastline toward Diamond Head. It’s not just a snorkel trip; the sail itself is a highlight for most guests.
